Upcoming Guest Speaker Taylor Berger

YoLo founder Taylor Berger has agreed to speak for us on Tuesday March 27.  Below is a brief bio of one of our local entrepreneurs!

Taylor C. Berger

Taylor Berger was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. He attended Christian Brothers High School, where he was a varsity wrestler, graduating in 1998. He went on to Rhodes, where he earned a B.A. in 2002, majoring in Anthropology/Sociology. After a year or so spent wandering the mountains and streams of northwestern Idaho, he returned to Memphis to attend law school at the University of Memphis. There he was a member of the Law Review, recipient of the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Legal Writing, and a judicial law clerk for the Hon. Robert S. Benham of Shelby County Probate Court. Taylor earned his J.D. in 2007 and went on to the University of Washington in Seattle, where he earned his LL.M. in taxation the following year. Upon his return to Memphis in 2008, he started the Memphis Area Legal Services Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic, a federal grant funded project providing representation to low-income taxpayers in disputes before the IRS and U.S. Tax Court. The clinic is still operational today, but Taylor left in 2009 to enter private practice with Williams, McDaniel, Wolfe, and Womack, PC, a small Memphis law firm specializing in estate planning, taxation, and probate matters.

In February 2010 while visiting his girlfriend in Birmingham, Taylor visited a self-serve frozen yogurt shop. Having missed a couple of previous business opportunities, Taylor took it upon himself not to let this one slip by. He sketched out a business plan and began seeking investors, which a month later he found in Mike McCaskill. They opened two YoLo shops in August of that year. Taylor quit practicing law a couple weeks later. He now operates five shops in the Memphis area and others in Jackson, Tennessee and Owensboro, Kentucky. He has licensed his brand to three operators in North Carolina. YoLo has expanded beyond frozen yogurt to become a producer of high-end baked goods and the only local producer of authentic Italian gelato. Taylor is currently working on a deal to enter the Nashville market, and to expand YoLo’s Memphis presence by taking over a competitor with two existing shops. Outside of YoLo, Taylor is also working on a new gourmet hot dog and taco restaurant concept called “Chiwawa” for the former Chicago Pizza Factory building in Overton Square.  In 2011 Taylor received the Joseph O. Henry award for an article he wrote that was published in in the Tennessee Bar Journal. He was also named Who’s Who in Memphis Magazine and in the Memphis Business Journal’s Top 40 Under 40. Taylor is married to a nurse named Alison (the girlfriend from Birmingham). They have a six-month old son named Andrew, who attends most of Taylor’s business meetings and supervises all of YoLo’s internal operations.
